Event viewing instructions:

1.  You will see the events of the whole month, in small segments, in the colour of the organization, with the title of the event and the time,
2.  Put your cursor on the event and you will see a small pop-up box with the name of the event, the time and price,
3.  Now left double-click on the event itself: a full -page window will open, with all the information about the event. This window has a white background and black distinctive easy- to- see writing.

JSA’s Empowerment #2: Movie-The Sturgeon Queens

Please join us for the second session in the series to be held with the Jewish Community Centre seniors, 1 p.m. to 2:15, in the Wosk auditorium at the JCC.

Our second empowerment Series features The Sturgeon Queens: The Story of Russ and Daughters. This documentary tells the history of one food store on the Lower East Side of New York that has survived and thrived for 100 years. The film will be followed by a light nosh.

Eating our way through Jewish History: Food – The Doorway to our Culture

The award winning film “Dough” will be shown as the third in a series of presentations featuring food and Jewish culture and tradition. Join us for Dough, a warmhearted comedy about overcoming prejudice as an old Jewish baker takes on a young Muslim apprentice to save his failing kosher bakery.

I.L. Peretz reading and discussion group of Peretz’s stories and poetry, in English.

Starting in  September, the group has decided to read short stories by other Jewish authors either in translation or those written in English. 

Meets 2nd and 4th Saturday each month.

Radical Readings: Biblical Symbolism in Leonard Cohen’s Songs

Matthew Gindin’s Radical Readings series will be on Oct. 18, 7 pm. 

Topic: Biblical Symbolism in Leonard Cohen’s Songs. 

Leonard Cohen made extensive and brilliant use of symbols and images from the Hebrew bible and Jewish Spiritual literature in his songs. We’ll go through the lyrics to three songs and discuss the riches to be found there upon close reading. 

Matthew Gindin is a journalist and educator and is the Education Director at the Peretz Centre. This is the second class in this year’s series of five lectures.

He is currently writing a book about Cohen’s spiritual life.

Vancouver Jewish Folk Choir

Vancouver Jewish Folk Choir rehearsal: every Tuesday at 7:30 pm. Conductor: David Millard, accompanist: Elliott Dainow.

The largest, best, and Only Yiddish choir west of Winnipeg, the Vancouver Jewish Folk Choir performs the music of the Jewish people in Yiddish, Hebrew, Ladino and English, as well as other languages of countries where Jews have lived.

The Choir performs for holiday celebrations and special events at the Peretz Centre and in the Jewish and mainstream communities. The Choir welcomes all new members. What better way to spend a Tuesday evening.
