JSA – Phyliss and Irving Snider Foundation Empowerment Series: Mel Brooks – Behind the Scenes
Jan 26 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

MEL BROOKS – BEHIND THE SCENES

The Producers Problem: Propaganda, Provocation, Promotion?

Thursday/Friday January 26 / 27 1:00pm – 2:30pm | on Zoom
Free. To receive the link: contact Lisa Quay lisa@jccgv.bc.ca

Mel Brooks’ films are known for walking the tightrope between comedy and real-world commentary. We will explore how Brooks achieved this balance in his seismic hit The Producers, and controversies around his brazen Hitler-meets-hilarity approach.
Adam Roberts will analyze the original 1967 film and the 2001 Broadway stage adaptation, considering the critical reception of each work, as he peeks behind the zeitgeist of this unlikely fable.

Special Programs at the JCC With Guest Artist-in-Residence Adam Roberts

Guest Artist-in-Residence Adam Roberts is an award-winning musical director and teacher. He was the founding Artistic Director of the Austin (TX) Jewish Repertory Theatre and co-founding Artistic Director of TILT Performance Group. Roberts was Director of Musical Theatre with the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, and is a contributing writer for Backstage magazine.

Sponsored in part by the JSA – Phyliss and Irving Snider Foundation Empowerment Series.

We investigate the ways in which fraudsters take in people to rob them of their money and possessions. Seniors are frequent victims and need to be aware of how to protect themselves.

Presented by Patrick Harkness:

Let me introduce myself to you. I’m a healthy and active member of my community and present the following:

During my 35-year career with the Province of BC, my accomplishments included:

· Supervising large field survey crews locating new highways throughout the province,

· Led a team of specialists ensuring and improving provincial departments’ safety programs, and

· Overseeing the southwestern region of BC within the Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) working with local authorities and helping them to succeed in developing, updating, and managing their emergency preparedness and business continuity plans.

A year following my retirement I established my own consulting firm that:

· Aided private, public, and Indigenous peoples in how to better meet their due diligence in being prepared for unplanned eventualities, and

· Agreed to participate and eventually lead subject-matter-experts in the development of national and international standards through the Canadian Standards Association (CSA); the Standards Council of Canada (SCC); and, the International Association for Standardization (ISO).

On behalf of my community, this province, and our country, I continue to

· Serve as vice-chair to the BC Gov’t Retired Employees’ Assoc. – Cheam View Branch (Upper Fraser) as well as the 2nd VP of the provincial executive

· Represent the BCGREA Branch as liaison with the Council of Senior Citizens Organizations (COSCO)

· Volunteer as a Workshop Facilitator for both COSCO and the Seniors Health and Wellness Institute (SHWI)

· Represent provincial and national ‘interest groups’ advocating more inclusion for our ageing society as a Consumer Representative within the CSA, SCC, and ISO.

Jewish Seniors Alliance is pleased to invite you to ‘A Night in the Catskills: Jewish Humour Then and Now’. While some might question whether it’s appropriate to hold a gala at this difficult time, throughout the centuries Jews have used humour to deal with adversity. Today is no different.

You may recall JSA organized a similar Comedy Night 13 years ago. We are thrilled to tell you that our Board Director Michael Geller will once again be our charming MC! The evening will feature video clips of famous Borsht Belt comics along with clips of contemporary Jewish comedians. Local rabbis have been invited to share some favourite jokes they would never tell in shul.

We hope you join us in honour of 20 years of Seniors helping Seniors!
