Jewish Seniors Alliance is pleased to invite you to ‘A Night in the Catskills: Jewish Humour Then and Now’. While some might question whether it’s appropriate to hold a gala at this difficult time, throughout the centuries Jews have used humour to deal with adversity. Today is no different.

You may recall JSA organized a similar Comedy Night 13 years ago. We are thrilled to tell you that our Board Director Michael Geller will once again be our charming MC! The evening will feature video clips of famous Borsht Belt comics along with clips of contemporary Jewish comedians. Local rabbis have been invited to share some favourite jokes they would never tell in shul.

We hope you join us in honour of 20 years of Seniors helping Seniors!

Join Ben Shneiderman as he explores the influential lives of his parents, journalists Samuel and Eileen Shneiderman, in the turbulent times leading up to World War II, as well as his uncle, legendary photojournalist, David Seymour (Chim). Inspired by their examples, Ben became a computer scientist and technology innovator, shaping widely used commercial products.

Coming from Poland, the Yiddish journalism of my parents, (Samuel L. Shneiderman (1906-1996) and Eileen Shneiderman (1908-2004), in France, Spain, and then New York, had great impact as did the photojournalism of my legendary uncle (David Seymour-Chim, 1911-1956, Home page) in the turbulent times leading up to World War II. Then coming to North America, they resumed their work in new surroundings with new languages. Inspired by their examples, I became a computer scientist and technology innovator, shaping widely used commercial products, even as I moved to Vancouver.

My parents’ English and Yiddish work is currently receiving attention and fresh translations, such as the English translation of their 1938 Yiddish book Journey into the Spanish Civil War (to be published in June by the Yiddish Book Center’s White Goat Press). They are featured in a new website, A Vital Partnership, of the U.S. National Museum of American Jewish History and our family story is at a second website. My uncle’s photography Is held by the U.S. Library of Congress and will be shown at an exhibit opening in July at the Oregon Jewish Museum and Holocaust Education Center.
