Once more we have proof that seniors RULE! Under our silver hair there are years of experience and knowledge. With these words our President of JSA, Serge Haber welcomed the more than 200 who had assembled to share their concerns about senior care at the BI on October 30th. He also emphasized that we are a power to be reckoned with and must /should be treated with dignity as befitting that crown of silver hair.
Speakers
With those words Serge Haber, our president opened the forum which was expertly chaired by Dr. Rubin Feldman, very knowledgeable in every aspect of senior care, having had both personal and professional experience.
Dr.Gloria Levy, Gerontologist, author and social worker, who is always a practical professional speaker, levelheaded and so easy to comprehend and approach, gave a brief summary of what we were to expect in the next 2 1/2 hours.
A theme we should all recognize is that we are really dealing with 2 generations when we talk of seniors those 50-80 and those 80 plus. Remembering too, that the middle aged adult, who is thoughtless, foolish and selfish becomes the aged copy of that younger person.. and the wise , considerate man of character also ages in the same vein. One does not mellow, one becomes more so.
Our needs are increasing because the numbers of seniors are ever increasing and those needs being individualized specific to each senior are so very difficult to be met.
The film “The Remaining Light“was indeed illuminating as it shed ‘light’ on the sad situations in senior homes even those with highly trained staff because of lack of sufficient personnel to attend to the requests of the residents. This was later echoed by seniors in our attentive audience who said they lived the reality of the film.
